Precision execution for critical assets

Flange Management & JOINT INTEGRITY

Bringing Control, Traceability and Assurance to Every Critical Connection.

A single uncontrolled flange can undermine months of planning, delay start-up, create safety risks and result in significant production losses. Effective flange management is therefore not simply a documentation exercise—it is the foundation of a successful shutdown, turnaround or maintenance event.

JII Services provides comprehensive end-to-end Flange Management and Joint Integrity solutions, delivering complete visibility and control of every bolted connection throughout the project lifecycle. Our approach begins long before the first flange is broken and continues through to mechanical completion, startup and final handover.

Working alongside operators, maintenance teams and turnaround contractors, we identify, catalogue and permanently tag each bolted connection with a unique identifier, creating full traceability across the asset. From this foundation, we develop Disturbed Joint Registers (DJRs), Critical Joint Registers (CJRs) and detailed work packs that allow critical connections to be effectively planned, managed and controlled throughout execution.

During shutdown and turnaround activities, JII provides independent flange inspection, joint integrity oversight and controlled bolting supervision to ensure every connection is assembled in accordance with approved procedures, industry standards and project-specific requirements. Inspection findings, component condition, assembly records and verification activities are captured throughout the process, creating a comprehensive history record for each connection and providing a level of traceability that extends far beyond traditional flange management programmes.

Our role does not end with assembly. Through systematic post-assembly verification and specialist completion inspections, we provide independent assurance that critical joints have been assembled correctly, inspected thoroughly and are suitable for service. This process culminates in documented mechanical completion certification, providing confidence that systems are ready for the safe introduction of process fluids.

Recognising that every operator is at a different stage of their joint integrity journey, JII Services offers both fully integrated flange management programmes and standalone specialist services. Whether supporting the development of a site-wide joint integrity programme, managing a major turnaround, conducting post-assembly completion inspections or providing independent technical assurance, our objective remains the same: to reduce leak risk, improve execution quality and help clients achieve safe, reliable and leak-free startup.

“Effective joint integrity is not achieved by tracking flanges—it is achieved by controlling them.”

Inspection, Assessment & QA/QC

Proprietary Flanged Connection Inspection Standard.

The integrity of any bolted connection depends upon the condition, suitability and interaction of every component within the joint assembly. Yet despite the criticality of flange inspections, no recognised industry standard currently provides a comprehensive step-by-step methodology for conducting in-field flange face condition assessments.

Recognising this gap, JII Services has developed its own proprietary Flanged Connection Inspection Standard. Built upon the damage acceptance criteria, tolerances and technical principles contained within ASME PCC-1, our methodology expands these requirements into a structured inspection process that includes defined inspection sequences, assessment criteria, recording requirements and engineering-based acceptance guidance.

This approach delivers consistency, repeatability and confidence, ensuring flange condition assessments are based on objective criteria rather than individual interpretation. More importantly, it provides operators with a documented and auditable process for evaluating the condition of critical sealing surfaces before reassembly.

Our inspection and quality assurance services extend beyond flange faces alone. JII conducts comprehensive assessments of gasket seating surfaces, bolting, gaskets and associated components, evaluating their suitability against site specifications, recognised industry standards and global best practice. Where appropriate, we assess bolting and gasket selection to confirm components are optimised for the intended operating conditions, taking into account factors such as temperature, pressure, media compatibility and joint design.

During execution, JII provides independent QA/QC oversight of assembly and controlled bolting activities, ensuring approved procedures are followed, critical hold points are observed and workmanship meets the standards expected of high-consequence process plant equipment. Detailed inspection records, verification reports and assembly documentation create a complete audit trail, providing confidence that every critical connection has been assembled, inspected and verified in accordance with project requirements.

As an independent third-party specialist, our focus extends beyond compliance alone. We understand that shutdown teams are often required to make difficult decisions when damaged or degraded components are discovered and repair options are limited. Drawing upon engineering principles, practical experience and recognised industry guidance, we provide technically justified recommendations that help operators understand not only the condition of a connection, but its likelihood of achieving and maintaining a reliable seal.

“JII recognises that every organisation is at a different stage of its joint integrity journey. Rather than imposing a predetermined solution, we begin by understanding your current position and developing a structured approach that aligns with your operational requirements, resources and long-term objectives.”

Engineering & Technical Advisory

Solving the Cause, Not the Consequence.

Many joint integrity issues are repeatedly treated as maintenance problems when, in reality, they are engineering problems. Recurring flange leaks, gasket failures, bolt relaxation and repeated intervention on the same connections are often symptoms of a deeper issue within the joint design, component selection or operating conditions. Unless the root cause is understood and addressed, the cycle of failure continues.

JII Services provides specialist engineering and technical advisory support designed to identify and resolve these underlying causes. Combining practical field experience with recognised engineering methodologies, we help operators move beyond symptom management and implement solutions that deliver long-term reliability.

Our engineering capability includes detailed flange and bolted joint analysis in accordance with EN 1591-1 and recognised ASME methodologies. Using actual operating data, we evaluate flange geometry, gasket stresses, bolt loading requirements, component suitability and sealing performance under the conditions the joint will experience in service. Pressure, temperature, fluid media, thermal cycling, external loading and operational duty are all considered to determine whether a connection is genuinely fit for purpose.

Where recurring integrity issues exist, we investigate the root cause and develop practical engineering solutions that improve reliability and reduce operational risk. Whether the challenge relates to flange design, gasket selection, bolting specification, assembly methodology or process conditions, our objective is to ensure that critical connections are engineered to maintain a reliable seal throughout their service life.

Beyond engineering analysis, JII provides specialist technical support to strengthen organisational capability and improve standards across the entire joint integrity programme. We develop site-specific bolting procedures, flange management standards, inspection methodologies and work instructions aligned with recognised international standards while remaining tailored to the unique customer requirement.

We also deliver competency assessments and specialist training programmes covering flange disassembly and assembly, controlled bolting, torque and tensioning, flange inspection, flange isolation, portable machining, flange restoration and pipe repair technologies. These programmes are designed not only to improve technical competence, but to embed a culture of quality, ownership and integrity throughout the workforce.

Whether supporting a single problematic connection, reviewing a site-wide joint integrity programme or developing engineering standards for an entire facility, JII provides the technical expertise, practical experience and independent perspective required to make informed decisions and achieve sustainable improvements.

Heat Exchanger & Fin Fan Services

Critical Path Equipment. Single-Point Accountability.

Few items of equipment have a greater influence on turnaround success than heat exchangers and air-cooled exchangers. Delays during maintenance, poor assembly practices or sealing failures discovered during testing can quickly impact critical path activities, extend outage durations and introducing start-up risk.

JII Services provides comprehensive integrity management and execution support for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, air-cooled exchangers and fin fan systems, delivering a fully integrated service that combines technical expertise, field execution and independent quality assurance under a single accountability.

For shell-and-tube heat exchangers, our services encompass the complete maintenance cycle, including isolation and spading of associated pipework, flange disassembly, rigging coordination, channel head removal, sealing face inspection, gasket management, controlled reassembly, bolting and final mechanical completion verification. Throughout the process, sealing surfaces, components and critical interfaces are inspected to ensure suitability for continued service before assembly.

By managing the complete scope, JII removes the need for multiple contractors and fragmented responsibilities, ensuring seamless coordination between disciplines while maintaining full traceability and quality control throughout the execution phase. Rigging, lifting, assembly verification and final sign-off are managed through a structured process designed to minimise delays and reduce the risk of startup leakage.

For air-cooled exchangers (Fin Fans), JII delivers specialist closure management services supported by engineering analysis and integrity assessment. Our teams undertake controlled closure removal, sealing face inspection, in-situ machining, gasket assessment and controlled assembly activities. Where closure integrity is critical, we perform detailed analytical calculations to evaluate seating stresses, bolt loads and sealing performance across multiple gasket technologies in accordance with API 661, TEMA and recognised industry practices.

This engineering-led approach allows us to verify that closures are not only assembled correctly, but that the selected gasket, bolting arrangement and assembly methodology are capable of maintaining an effective seal under actual operating conditions. The result is reduced uncertainty, improved reliability and increased confidence during startup.

Complete isolation installation and removal services are incorporated within our scope, providing clients with a single contractor responsible for managing integrity from initial isolation through to mechanical completion.

Whether supporting a major turnaround, planned maintenance or equipment intervention, JII delivers the technical expertise, execution capability and independent assurance required to keep critical path equipment on schedule and leak-free.

“JII doesn't tighten bolts to a torque value. JII applies a calculated bolt load to achieve a reliable seal. Every leak-free bolted connection begins with one fundamental requirement: achieving the correct bolt load.”

Torquing & Tensioning

Precision Bolt Load. Proven Joint Integrity.

Every leak-free bolted connection begins with one fundamental requirement: achieving the correct bolt load. Too little can result in insufficient gasket compression and leakage. Too much can damage components, overstress bolting and compromise long-term performance. The challenge is not simply tightening bolts—it is applying the correct preload uniformly, accurately and consistently across the entire joint assembly.

JII Services provides specialist controlled bolting solutions using calibrated hydraulic torque and tensioning equipment operated by trained and competent personnel. Our approach is founded on the principle that bolt load, not torque, is the critical parameter governing joint integrity. Tightening activities are driven by engineering calculations and recognised standards rather than generic torque tables.

Target bolt loads are established using ASME PCC-1 and EN 1591-1 methodologies, taking into consideration flange geometry, gasket characteristics, operating pressures, temperatures and service conditions. This ensures that the applied preload is appropriate for the specific joint and capable of delivering the gasket seating stresses required to achieve and maintain a reliable seal.

Whether working on standard process pipework, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, critical service connections or high-consequence systems, our technicians follow controlled tightening procedures designed to achieve uniform bolt stress distribution and repeatable assembly quality across every connection. Torque and tensioning techniques are selected on the joint configuration and operational requirements, ensuring the most effective tightening method is employed for each application.

Throughout the process, JII provides complete traceability and documentation. Tool calibration records, calculated target loads, tightening sequences, verification activities and assembly records are maintained to create a comprehensive audit trail for every critical connection. This level of control not only supports compliance and quality assurance requirements but also provides confidence that assembly activities have been executed correctly and consistently.

As an independent joint integrity specialist, our focus extends beyond simply achieving a specified torque value. We understand how bolt load influences gasket stress, flange behaviour and long-term sealing performance, allowing us to deliver tightening solutions that support the integrity of the complete joint assembly rather than the bolting alone.

Every joint JII tightens is backed by a calculated target load, a calibrated tool, a competent operative and a signed record. That is what leak-free performance looks like in practice.

Flange Face Repair & Machining

Restoring Sealing Integrity. Reducing Downtime.

Damaged or degraded flange sealing faces are a common but critical threat to joint integrity. Corrosion, pitting, scoring, mechanical damage or erosion can all compromise gasket seating performance and increase the risk of leakage during operation.

Where defects are identified, particularly during shutdown or maintenance windows, time and access constraints often make component replacement impractical. In these situations, rapid restoration of sealing integrity is essential to maintain schedule and ensure safe startup.

JII Services provides in-situ flange face repair and precision portable machining to restore sealing surfaces to the required dimensional tolerances and surface finish standards for reliable gasket performance. By machining directly on site, we eliminate the need for component removal, reduce downtime and minimise disruption to critical maintenance activities.

All restored surfaces are inspected and verified to ensure suitability for reassembly and service. Where repair is not feasible, we provide technical guidance on sealing risk and available options to support safe, informed decision-making.

The result is restored sealing integrity, reduced downtime and confidence that critical connections are fit for service.
